abstract = "In this article, I emphasize Korean women’s literary traditions and the social and historical relevance of Korean women’s literature. I trace the emergence of twentieth-century Korean women’s poetry in the context of the Korean women’s movement of the 1920s and 1930s and the more recent developments in the Korean women’s movement from the 1970s to the 1990s. I give attention to Korean feminist poets such as Ch’oe Sŭng-ja, Kim Hye-sun, and Yi Yŏn-ju, who in their works challenge and resist the literary expectations imposed on Korean women poets with their innovative use of language. I argue that their poetry displays critical consciousness of the condition of Korean women in a neocolonial, capitalist, and patriarchal society."
