  Abstract

Shadowy hills lie in the distance; a dark, wide river flows in the foreground; blue stars seem to fall over the hills, over the fields, and over the dark river. The quiet late night is holding its breath. On a sandy beach by the river is pitched a big tent, in which the women are gathered, intoxicated by the magic incantations of a sorceress. Their faces show undoubted signs of sad excitement, and of tiredness such as one feels as the dawn approaches.
